Melton Golf Club: Burgess qualifies for Lombard regional finals

Despite cold and wet weather, the scoring was excellent with John Burgess’ two-under handicap nett 68 securing the win and a trip to Little Aston. Runner-up was Sam Pollard (nett 69) and senior member Bob Barnes was third with a level handicap nett 70 on countback.

Sam also shot the best gross of 71.

* Junior captain Jake Mogg won the midweek medal with a nett 70 on countback over the back nine from Jack Griffin.

Kieran Foster shot a net 71 to finish third and claimed the best gross with a 73. Mezz Watchorn and Oliver Duley won the two’s sweep.

Anthony Bostock won the Sunday Stableford with 37 points, chased closely by Matt Wade on 35 and Matt Catton (33).

* The final of the men’s Winter Foursomes saw Rob Smith and Jon Baxter meet last year’s runners-up Paul Gough and Mick Cavani in a hard-fought contest.

Trailing by two after three holes, Gough and Cavani fought back to level at the ninth. The back nine was nip-and-tuck until the 17th where Gough and Cavani went 1 up and secured victory by winning the 18th.

The pair will represent Melton in the 2017 Daily Mail Foursomes. Losing semi-finalists were Matt and Ray Catton, and Terry Brown with Owen Cook.

* The ladies’ section played in the monthly Medal last Wednesday where Kathie Finn was overall winner and claimed the Division One top spot with a score of nett 81.

Drina Terzza was second with nett 84, while Sue Millward shot a nett 82 to win Division Two, four shots clear of runner-up Anne Creed.

* The new Ladies’ Summer League, set up in conjunction with the men’s midweek competitions, got under way using a medal format.

Leah Radford won the opening spoils with a round of nett 81, one shot clear of runner-up Sue Hitchman on nett 82.

* Melton C Team opened their match season by hosting Stoke Rochford in a local derby.

New team captain Glenn Price led the home team with partner Keith Tomblin and eased to a 4-up lead through the front nine.

Stoke fought back hard over the next few holes and coming to the 18th tee, Melton held a slender one-hole advantage, but held on to win the hole and the game.

Excellent wins were also recorded by Pete Rayers and Dave Wells, and Billy Kevan with Ian King as Melton won the rubber 4½ to 1½.
