GOLFERS gathered at Greetham Valley for the rescheduled Sturgess Volvo competition, played on the Lakes course.

James Cure took full advantage of kind conditions to post his best score of the year and win the trophy. James, playing off a handicap of 10, parred the first but dropped two shots on the next two holes.

Three more pars were followed by a bogey on the seventh, but then followed an unbelievable run as James dropped only one more shot in the next 11 holes to come home with a gross 76 (nett 66).

The score also won him the prize for best gross score and earned him a handicap cut to nine.

James said: I was very relaxed all the way through the game and everything just seemed to slot into place, greens in regulation, two putts, move on to the next hole, easy life.”

Twenty-seven handicapper Justin Perry also had a fantastic round, finishing second with a gross 95 (nett 68) to reduce his handicap by two. Gary Moat, off 14, was third with a gross 83 (nett 69), and out of the top 25 finishers, 16 were off 10 and below.

l The first round of the Winter Order of Merit, organised by Neil Harris, got under way this weekend with many new faces among the ranks.

Men’s vice-captain Trevor Smith, playing off two, was one of the newcomers and made his presence felt by blitzing the field to win round one with an impressive 41 points. He was docked two shots and will play the next round off plus point three.

Ted Burke, a 22-handicapper, took second place with an impressive 40 points and was cut to 21, while third place went to Simon Bateman, off six, who scored 39 points to be cut to five.

l Robert Lewin had a great win in the October midweek stableford on the Lakes course.

Robert won with 41 points and was cut to 14 with runner-up Fraser Denholm scoring 38 points to be cut to six, having started the year playing off a handicap of 13. Martyn Pitcher (36 points) was third.
