Women's football: Asfordby Amateurs stay third despite forgettable display

Asfordby Amateurs kept their place in the Senior League top three, but their latest victory over Coalville Ladies was not as straightforward as the scoreline suggested.

The hosts started superbly, racing into a three-goal lead within 10 minutes thanks to strikes from Hannah Green, Sarah Brown and Jess Nightingale.

At that stage it seemed Asfordby were cruising towards a big win, but the game grew progressively scrappier and by the break, it was Coalville who had created the better chances.

The visitors continued to fight back in the second half as they pulled a goal back and could have had more if they had taken their chances.

But a combination of good saves from Ellie Roberts and determined defending from Clare Marlow, as well as wasteful finishing, made sure the points were safe.

Asfordby held out and made the game safe late on with a well-worked goal from player-of-the-match Sarah Milner.

A forgettable performance but an important three points.
