Mowbray played some great pass-and-move football and the game would have been over after half-an-hour if it wasn’t for plenty of wasted chances.

They went in front on 15 minutes when Jack Baker put Aidan Black through on goal to calmly slot home.

Emi Chiavetta added the second with Baker again the provider as Chiavetta burst from defence to chip the advancing keeper.

The heavens opened with hail and rain which seemd to disturb Melton’s rhythm as Ashby scored a quickfire double to get back into the game.

But just before half-time, Palfreyman restored Melton’s lead with a tap-in and Aaron Black pounced on a poor clearance and his wonderful volley from 25 yards lobbed the keeper.

Melton continued to dominate the second period, but again wasted further chances.

Makeshift centre-half Adam Bishop had a fine game with his pin-point distribution, and Aidan Black grabbed his second from the penalty spot to make it 5-2.

Youngster Shaun Smith scored his maiden goal for the first team when he neatly turned in the box. His initial shot was saved, but the striker kept a calm head to fire into the corner.

Ashby completed the scoring with a well-taken late consolation.

Melton complete their Senior League campaign at GNG on Tuesday in a re-arranged fixture. Kick-off 7.45pm.

Melton: Cragg, Lapworth, Chiavetta, Bishop (c), Clayton, Myring (Hazeldine), Baker, Aaron Black, Aidan Black, Wain (Smith), Palfreyman.
