Returning Asfordby Lions edge out Oadby

After almost a month since their last game, Asfordby Lions Under 14s produced a great team performance at Oadby in difficult windy conditions.

Asfordby started well with most of the possession and went close when good play from McCafferty and Azhashemi allowed Hill to jink his way into the box with only a last-gasp tackle denying him.

Oadby tested keeper Wade with a counter-attack and then pressed the defence of Jolliffe, Wallis and Herod as they looked to put crosses into the box.

The hosts pounced on a loose ball to take the lead, but Asfordby levelled from the restart as Saffhill fed Hill who calmly slotted past the keeper.

Oadby retook the lead when Wade’s clearance rebounded off the attacker and was tapped home.

With half-time approaching Wade’s long goal-kick, found Hill who judged the bounce well and sped past the defence to shoot low past the advancing keeper.

Oadby used the wind in the second half to put pressure on the midfield of Swann, Cook, Saffhill and McCracken, but the Lions went ahead for the first time when Cameron’s inswinging corner was missed by the keeper and found the net.

With their tails up, Asfordby forged forward, McCafferty pulling a clearance down and unleashing a thunderous shot into the top corner.

Wade produced a great punch to clear a corner, but more pressure was heaped on Asfordby as Oadby made it 4-3 minutes later.

Oadby were reduced to shooting from distance as Wallis, Herod and Jolliffe closed down the attackers.

Jolliffe was forced off through injury and replaced by Azhashemi in central defence, and Ladjimi replaced Cook in midfield as Asfordby held on for a good win.
