Cameron Steans and Shaun Smith grabbed hat-tricks as Melton routed Beaumont last Sunday to keep the pressure on the leaders.

The early stages gave no sign of what was to come with the hosts looking very lively and creating the first chance, Adam Lauchlan making an excellent tackle to deny them.

But the Foxes went ahead after 19 minutes when a long through ball put Smith clear. His shot was parried by the keeper, but Steans side-footed home from close range.

The hosts were happy to clear a close-range effort off the line from Ainge’s corner before Smith was put through again and sliced his shot wide and then screwed a close-range effort off-target.

Connor McNeight made a diving save to preserve the lead, but Smith was not to be denied and calmly chipped the advancing keeper when put through by Lewis Thorpe.

Seconds later Smith was again denied by the keeper, but five minutes before half-time Ainge got clear on the right and crossed for Steans to head home.

Within seconds of the restart, Smith’s brilliant dummy set up Steans but the keeper smothered his close-range effort.

Smith teed up Steans’ hat-trick goal before Lewis Thorpe burst through and sent a low shot under the keeper to make it 5-0 on the hour.

Smith cut in from the right and sent a 20-yarder flashing past the keeper before repeating the feat seconds later, hitting a terrific drive in from the edge of the area to complete his hat-trick.

Alex Kotarba got in on the act when he crossed low for Alex Walker to drive home from 12 yards for 8-0.

And Kotarba turned supplier again, setting up an easy chance for Ainge to cap the scoring.

Kotarba twice fired wide as he looked to make it double figures.
