Football gave something back to the community last Wednesday when donations were made to three good causes.

Melton Charity Cup committee chairman Graham Digby presented £350 grant cheques to each of the charities thanks to proceeds from last season’s competitions.

The donations went to the Melton Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, the Somerby-based Mount Group Riding for the Disabled, and Age Concern’s Pensioners Contact Scheme.

Thanks went to cup sponsors Graham and Linda Parker, Gordon Wells, programme advertiser Melton Mowbray Building Society, Holwell Sports for hosting the games, and the Melton Times for promoting the competition.

The committee also paid tribute to the Melton Referees’ Association for donating most of their match fees and expenses, Festival of Football for supplying the trophies free of charge, and the clubs, players, and spectators.

Several businesses and individuals also provided prizes for the cup final raffle – Sainsbury’s, Nicko’s fish and chip shop, Off the Beaten Path coffee shop, and Roger Hodson.
