First half show enough for Holwell U18s victory

Midweek Floodlit Youth League

North Division

HOLWELL SPORTS 3 STAPENHILL 0

HOLWELL were the first to show in attack with Sam Barrows, back from injury, forcing the keeper into a full-length save low down.

Stapenhill replied with a snap-shot which hit the bar and the rebound was ballooned over. Holwell continued to press with Hedley Lovegrove seeing his 25-yard shot shave the far upright before his shot, from a Carlton Cropper pass, was half-cleared to Barrows who poked home from close range.

Eventually Lovegrove got on the scoresheet. Making tracks down the left, he jinked inside a defender and with his shot zipping off the wet surface, beat the keeper at his near post.

A quick Stapenhill break should have paid dividends, but Ross Dunlop made a terrific block to snuff out the danger.

Holwell capitalised on the escape when Jack Dolby, on the overlap down the right, hit a speculative shot towards goal which took a huge deflection off a defender to beat the stranded keeper.

Stapenhill must have had the hair-dryer treatment at half-time as they pegged Holwell back in the second half.

But the home defence, well marshalled by Joe Slater, Dunlop and keeper Aaron Watkins, denied them a goal. Dunlop made another decisive block, while a Stapenhill shot clipped the crossbar, and a dipping volley brought the best out of Watkins who also dealt well with a strong header.

Sam Dixey had Holwell’s best chance, when his free kick got over the wall, but lacked power.

Man-of-the-match, sponsored by Roger Hodson, was Ross Dunlop.
