Caterpillar hold on as Asfordby Amateurs fightback falls just short

Midweek Floodlit Youth League

North Division

ASFORDBY AMATEURS 3 CATERPILLAR 4

ASFORDBY made the worst possible start, conceding in the second minute when a soft shot somehow squirmed under Mike La-Barbera.

It grew worse 10 minutes later when Asfordby had numerous chances to clear before another soft effort ended up in the net. Mitch Noble’s free kick just cleared the bar before Caterpillar made it 3-0 when the striker latched on to a free kick to score with ease.

Ash Hill shot wide before Chad Winfield reduced the arrears, shooting low into the corner from Toby Heaver’s pass.

La-Barbera made two fantastic saves and Michael Odiam cleared off the line to deny the visitors. Winfield spurned two good chances as the half came to an end.

Three minutes into the second half Caterpillar made it 4-1 with a very good finish, but from then on it was all Asfordby. Winfield’s run and cross was met by Hill, but his shot went agonisingly wide.

Noble’s free kick was saved as Hill and Adam Wright forced good openings. And they were rewarded when Winfield latched on to Levi Routen’s through ball to slot past the keeper.

With 20 minutes remaining Liam Sharpley’s brilliant pass found Sam Thorpe who beat two defenders and the keeper to make it 4-3.

Routen, Wright and Winfield all went close to equalising, and deep into injury time, Kieran Mackie’s header hit the bar as Caterpillar hung on.

With a fortnight’s gap to their next fixture, Asfordby will concentrate on getting their injured regulars fit for three tough away games at Ashby, Stapenhill and Barrow.
