Asfordby Amateurs impress in Desford stalemate

On a cold and miserable afternoon, Asfordby Amateurs gave their best performance of the season in an entertaining encounter at Desford on Sunday.

The hosts looked threatening right from the start with their quick and mobile strikers, but Clare Marlow, excellent at centre-back, organised her defence well.

Asfordby found their way back into the game and took the lead when a fine pass from Heidi Millin found Jess Nightingale who added to her great run of goalscoring form with a clinical finish.

The visitors pressed, but it was Desford who equalised just before the break with a shot into the top corner which beat keeper Ellie Roberts.

Amateurs were again under pressure at the start of the second half, but a combination of solid defending and fine saves from Roberts kept them in the game.

Both Asfordby wide players Hannah Green and Sarah Brown worked hard to track back and help the defence, and as the half went on the visitors created chances of their own.

They were awarded a penalty late on, but the Desford keeper saved.

The draw was probably the right result, but this was an excellent all-round performance, and Asfordby remain third in the League at the season’s midway point.

Amateurs: E. Roberts, A. Roberts, M. Reader, C. Marlow, K. Hutton, T. Brookes, H. Millin, H. Tyman, D. Sharpe, S. Anderson, S. Milner, S. Brown, J. Nightingale, H. Green.
