Thorpe Arnold add Frank Woodhead Cup to silverware haul

Hickman hit 84 in the 18-over-a-side match as Thorpe clinched their second piece of silverware in less than a fortnight after last month’s Salaman Cup win.

Old Dalby won the toss and put Thorpe in to bat first in the final, held at Melton Mowbray’s All England Ground home.

Thorpe skipper Charlie Read (40) and Hickman put on more than 100 for the first wicket as Thorpe racked up a mammoth total of 152-2.

Chasing a difficult target, Dalby were soon on the back foot against great bowling from Waldron (3 for 16) and Jones (4 for 19).

Ben Wass (24) and Carrick Fone (22), top scored, but only some late spirited batting got Dalby up to a total of 75.

Hickman was named man-of-the-match by umpires Brian Marshall and Alan Bailey who presented the cup to Read.

* In the league, Upper Broughton (132-3) beat a young Hickling team (62-9) last Thursday.

Batting first, Ian Townsend (60 not out) and Matt Clough, returning to form with 47, were the main contributors for Broughton with youngsters Jack Playle and Charlie Overall bowling well.

In reply, Hickling struggled with Paul Stevenson and Andy Burton the chief wicket-takers.

Elsewhere, Thorpe Arnold (114) edged to a narrow eight-run win against Long Clawson (106-5).

Albert Grieves (40) and Charlie Read (44 not out) starred in Thorpe’s innings, putting on 80 for the first wicket, and in reply, Clawson got close, but good death bowling from Lewis Postle left them just short.

With the league going into its two additional weeks for postponed fixtures, it’s a two-horse race for the title between Old Dalby and Wymeswold who both boast unbeaten records.
