South Notts League: Belvoir foiled by last wicket pair

Belvoir had to settle for an 18-point haul as the Ellerslie tail held on to deny them victory on Saturday.

After losing both openers for seven, Tom Neville (57) and Greg Oldfield (62) plundered 124 runs in 18 overs for Belvoir’s second wicket.

A total of 300 looked a probability until Dan Footitt (5 for 61) and Kane Wilson chipped away at the middle order, with only 21 coming from Footitt’s last 10 overs.

Joe Bottomley played well for his 29 and both Gibson and Forbes battled their way to the final bonus point as Belvoir were dismissed for 212.

Dan Wilson’s stunning one-handed catch from the very first ball, and Ryan Lewis’s neat stumping, quickly left the visitors two down.

Their recovery was led by captain John Wakeling (55), but the required run rate rapidly increased as Bottomley (2 for 28) and Alex Forbes (2 for 17) made steady inroads.

Danny Gibson (3 for 31) took three late victims, but Belvoir failed to spring the last wicket as Ellerslie closed on 178-9.
