Everards County League: Turner experience steers Barkby Thirds to victory

Barkby Thirds skipper Michael Lilley lost his first toss of the summer, but hosts Maher Stars opted to bat first which suited the visitors.

Jack Fox (5-1-12-0) and Dan Lever (8-2-31-0) probed for the first wicket, but were denied by the stubborn openers.

Jack Sargeant (1 for 33) made the breakthrough and this opening was pounced on by Sandeep Lad (5 for 31), making only his second appearance, and Lilley (4 for 18), as the home side were dismissed for 142 inside 36 overs.

In the field there were catches for Trevor Knight, club stalwart Derek Turner, Lever and two from Sargeant.

Barkby openers Matthew Bartram (17) and Perry Stewart-Halford (8) were both caught early, before Sargeant was run out for seven.

Turner added experience and patiently guided the visitors toward the winning line.

Lever was also run out for a respectable 16, while Joe Keightley was clean bowled for five, and Harry Colville (7) gave his wicket away cheaply.

But Turner (49 not out) kept the scoreboard ticking over and eased Barkby to a four-wicket win with eight balls to spare.
