Young Simon captures Petfoods Trophy

SUNDAY, 1pm: Melton Golf Club hosted the Petfoods Trophy on Saturday with the course in excellent condition of the course producing scores of similar quality.
Junior member Simon Alcott won with nett 64 on countback from Steve Brown with Bev Blake third with a nett 65 on countback from Chris Leader.

One handicapper Kieran Foster won best gross with 67 and narrowly missed out on the course record with a double bogey late in the round.

Twos winners: Danny Law (x2), Lee Wilson (x2), Bill Hurrell, Andy Pedlar, Richard South, John Wheeler.

*The Rabbits' Order of Merit round two was won by Doug Wolley (nett 66) with Shane Walpole in second (nett 67) and Ian Brocklehurst third (nett 70) on countback.

Billy Kevan currently leads with 27 points, three ahead of Matt Handley, while Doug Woolley (22) is third and Darren Pick (19) fourth.

GREETHAM VALLEY 3½ MELTON C 2½

Winning pairs: Derek Whitehouse/Don Benzie 3 and 1, Steven Draisey/Eddie Cam 2-up, Ken Longbottom/Nigel Charles halved.

*The ladies played a well-supported par competition against the course this week and also a nine-hole qualifier.

Results - Division One: 1 Chris Cook -1; 2 Maureen Stapleford -2 ocb; 3 Jane Berry. Division Two: 1 Barbara Hamston +1; 2 Janet Bentley level; 3 Diane Orson -1 ocb; 4 Elaine Shelton.

*Friday's Ladies Open Am-Am on Friday attracted 31 fourballs.

The competition began in overcast conditions, playing a format of two to count on all holes except the par three where three scores counted and the 18th where all four scores counted.

Results: 1 The Gerri Hat Ricks (Belton Park) 94pts; 2 Two Plus Two (Melton Mowbray - Fay Hutton, Julia Brown, Dorothy Jaggers, Yvette Joyce) 92; 3 Cottesmore Flyers 87; 4 Toft Ladies 85. Nearest the Pin: Maureen Moakes (Park Hill). Longest Drive: Penny Hallam (Stoke Rochford).

*On Sunday the junior section held the Keightley Kerr Putter and the scoring was very close.

Leah Radford won with 42pts from runner-up Jamie Graham (41pts ocb) and Alex Austin. The 24 to 28 handicap section was won by Arron Squires-Nugent (36) from James Parker (32).
