WEDNESDAY, noon: More than 40 cups, shields and other trophies were awarded during the annual Syston Men's Bowling Club Presentation Night.
During the evening club president Colin Grimes invited Jayant Mistry, chief coach of the Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club, his nominated charity for 2009, to accept a cheque for close to £500.
Before becoming involved with the Cobras, Jayant was one of Britain's leading international wheelchair tennis players, a former winner of the Wimbledon title who has travelled around the world representing his country.
Grimes said: "I want to thank and congratulate all Members for their excellent support for the cause of Leicester Cobras throughout the year. Fundraising for good causes within the local community remains a key element within our Club's annual programme of activities.
I know that the Leicester Cobras have changed the lives of many local disabled people - of all ages and both sexes - by giving them a new interest, an opportunity to make many new friends and, from participation in this fast-and-furious, physically-demanding sport, to achieve great improvements in their physical fitness and mental well-being."
Mr Grimes also thanked Noel Evatt, competitions secretary, for his sterling organisational work throughout the year, and paid special tribute to the ladies' section of the club for their help and support.
