WEDNESDAY, 8.30am: St Francis School recovered from an early defeat to claim victory for Melton at the Leicestershire Youth Games on Sunday.
The school's Year 4 and 5 girls' football team drew the first game 0-0 and despite winning the next 1-0, lost the third group game 1-0 to Harborough.

After lunch, St Francis were a different team playing with renewed energy and enthusiasm, sweeping aside Leicester 2-0 with superb goals by Caitlin Danaher and Ashleigh Plumptre.

Two more wins came courtesy of Rosanna Wright's strike and two more from Plumptre. Goalkeeping debutant Shannon Aldridge played brilliantly and Maddie Blake, Lydia Garner and Caiomhe Doherty were excellent in defence.

The must-win last game against Rutland saw St Francis start brightly through Sophie Jones and Caitlin Sparling, but fall behind to an unstoppable goal.

But the Melton team showed great character, Danaher battling past three defenders to cross for Plumptre's equaliser. She dodged through the defence and put the team ahead with a superb second.

Garner and Doherty stood firm and St Francis' stamina told as they won 4-1, Plumptre completing a hat-trick, to lift the trophy.

St Francis: M. Blake, S. Aldridge, S. Jones, A. Plumptre, L. Garner, R. Wright, C. Danaher, C. Doherty, C. Sparling.
