Sheltons claim Family Foursomes

SUNDAY, 9am: Family members played together on Sunday to compete for Melton Golf Club's Family Foursomes Trophy.
The day was made harder by torrential rain, but husband and wife team John and Elaine Shelton won with net 74.5 from brother and sister Dale and Leah Radford second with net 75.5. Father and daughter Tom and Catherine Smith were third with 78.0.

On Thursday the club held its senior mixed open where 86 competitors took part. Despite fewer entries than previous years, everyone enjoyed the event.

Playing a betterball stableford some excellent scores were returned with Melton members taking the top three prizes.

Senior Mixed Open results (Melton players unless stated): 1 Geoff Townsend and Julia Brown 44pts; 2 Eddie and Gay Cham 43ocb; 3 Paddy and Gwen Doyle; 4 Terry and Carol Bowles (Ruddington Grange) 41ocb; 5 Frank and Christine Liles (Hinckley).

Men's nearest the pin (hole 5): K. Dugmore (Stoke Rochford). Ladies' nearest the pin (hole 14): Avis Griffin (Stoke Rochford).

*In breezy conditions, the men's section played the first round of the President's Putter on Saturday. Played over two rounds and two weekends, 105 members competed with only two shots separating the top four.

Edward Howett won with net 65 on countback from Jack Inguanta. In-form junior David Poolan shot 66 to take third and Brian Blake took fourth with 67. Mick Wilson's 75 was the best gross score.

Twos sweep: John Harvey, Dale Radford, Richard South, Alan Parkes, Michael Fish, Paul Blount, Richard Hutton, Kieran Foster, Barrie Clater, Geoff Townsend, Mick Wilson, Ron Thew, Matt Hatton.

*The rabbit's order of merit was won by Peter Keast's 72 on countback from Roy Tomley. Russell Freeman took third place on countback with a 73.

*The seniors played friendly matches against Radcliffe-on-Trent and Scraptoft.

They lost to Radcliffe by 1½ to 6½ with Owen Cook and Brian Grommett the only pair to win and John Parker with Alan Terzza halving, but the team fared better against Scraptoft with an excellent 6-2 win.

Melton winners: Vic Newham and Dave Lander (5 and 4), Peter Maine and John Baxter (6 and 5), Frank Williams and Malcolm Bryson (6 and 5), John Eastman and Ken Dimaline (2-up), Neville Palmer and Tom Hall (2 and 1), John Parker and Bob Parkinson (3 and 2).

*Other senior members played a singles stableford with Walter Griffin winning with 38 points and Paul Jones runner-up with 34.

*The ladies played the annual Lady Captain v Lady Vice-Captain match. Drina Terzza and Peggy Newton drew out the ladies' names to play for their team and the Lady Captain's team won by 6½ to a ½.
