WEDNESDAY, 9am: Nine teams from across the country gathered at Langham last week for some high velocity polo action.
Teams from Yorkshire, Cambridge, Cirencester, Berkshire and Hertfordshire lined up alongside two Rutland sides for the prestigious annual Assam Cup.

The beginning rounds, played over five days, were played in less than ideal conditions, but all the matches were completed with a few surprises.

The finalists were both local teams, as reigning champions Rathbones facing Ranksboro who won two rounds to qualify. The final was a fast and clean with very few fouls and after a scoreless first chukka, the pace hotted up as Rathbone's Matias Amaya scored twice.

In the third chukka, Amaya scored very quickly before Ranksboro came back through Martin Fiol's two 60-yard penalities to trail 4-2 going into the final period.

Marcus Collie opened the final chukka scoring with a lovely goal before Fiol pulled another back with a backhand, but Rathbones pulled away again, Amaya capping a 7-4 win by pushing through a backhand.

Rupert Heggs and Ollie Cudmore did great work setting up their goalscoring duo of Collie and Amaya, while the whole team shut down what is normally a great powerhouse in Ranksboro and preventing Federico Speciale's customary goalscoring fast runs.

Joe North battled valiantly, while Danny Carroll had a great match.
Amaya's Fenol won the Polo Times best playing pony rug, and the Mobil Cup winner was Richard Fagan and Andrew Foreman's Autodex who beat Barracuda from Beverley.

Rathbones 1 Marcus Collie, 2 Philip Baker/Ollie Cudmore, 3 Matias Amaya, Bk Rupert Heggs
Ranksboro': 1 Danny Carroll, 2 Joe North, 3 Martin Fiol, Bk Federico Speciale

*The Findlay Trophy, sponsored by Tennants Auctioneers, was a fierce battle between Stuart Hickman's Kingsbridge and Charlie Gordon-Watson's Felix, the latter running out the winners.
