FRIDAY, 9am: Melton RFC Under 9s made the move from tag to contact rugby with ease by winning the Kesteven Festival.
Regardless of the wet conditions, Melton excelled, conceding one try in five games and scoring 16 after a fine team effort.
Melton (pictured with their prize) rucked their way to a 15-0 victory against Sleaford with three first half tries through Bradley Johnson's brace and Adam Rowlatt. Fantastic rucking allowed Johnson to score his second try.
In a tight match against local rivals Oakham, Melton won through great mauling. Both sides showed excellent skills, but from a scrum Jack Owens touched down.
Oakham pressed for the equaliser after half-time, but Melton turned defence into attack. After another knock-on and scrum, Axi Hobil scored for a 10-0 win.
Johnson's hat-trick and a Jake Dixon score saw off Market Rasen 20-0.
Tom Green's strong run led to Johnson's first, while he forced his way over for a second try. After half-time Johnson completed his hat-trick before Dixon crossed after Oliver Wright's superb work.
Melton booked their place in the final with a 20-5 win against Newark Runners through tries from Wright, scrum-half Axi Hobil (2) scored two tries and Green.
Facing Kesteven in the final, Melton forced the hosts into basic errors and from one forward pass, Rowlatt opened the scoring. Johnson added a second and after the break, Wright picked up from a ruck and scored in the corner to seal a 15-0 triumph.
Melton: W. Foldys, O. Liddar, M. Ward, D. Morgan, A. Smith, H, Heaney, T. Carter, J. Beesley, O. Wright, A. Rowlatt, B. Johnson, A Hobil, J. Owens, J. Dixon, T. Green.
*Melton RFC Under 12s were unlucky to finish third after scoring 12 tries and conceding just one at the Kesteven Rugby Festival.
Melton lost the first match by a single try to eventual tournament winners Oakham. Conditions made it hard for the centres to create flowing moves, but after good Oakham defence repelled Melton, a huge penalty kick led to a lineout for the game's only try.
Against Market Rasen, Melton showed their class with forwards Tuckwood and Tebbatt combining well. Melton pressure created gaps for Tuckwood and G. Postle to score from the pack.
The team played well as a unit with supporting play whenever an attack broke down.
Tebbat scored a good try after fine work from full-back Legg and Heaver. Copley at scrum-half fed a quick ball to Harrold who finished off another great move.
Against Sleaford, Melton were at full throttle. Fly-half J. Postle glided past several players to gain territory, and after forward support, G. Postle scored two quick tries. Croxall, Tebbat and Harrold added tries.
Melton won their final match against well-organised Newark by three tries, capping an excellent day of rugby. Debutant Josh Wilson did an excellent job on the wing, while G. Postle at number eight was Melton's player of the day.
