MONDAY, 4.30pm: An under-strength Melton side travelled to this County Cup match more in hope than expectation, but showed great character to push a strong Syston side all the way.
County Colts Cup Round Two
SYSTON RFC 13 MELTON RFC 0
Indeed, Melton had the better of the early exchanges, but could not gain good enough field position to launch any telling attacks.
Syston took the lead with a penalty after 20 minutes which proved to be the difference between the sides at the break.
Strong tackling and defensive effort by both sides meant the game was played for the most part in the middle of the field with no quarter asked or given.
Syston scored what proved to be the decisive try halfway through the second period when the winger cut through in midfield and broke a couple of tackles to score near the posts. The conversion was successful.
Praise must go to Melton's pack which played its part to a man, snuffing out every thrust that Syston threw at them while creating a fair share of ball for the back line.
In particular a mention should go to Dan Wakefield who must be one of the best lineout jumpers in the county, aided by the throwing in of Marcus Badham. The final score came in the last five minutes as Syston won a penalty for a Melton infringement.
Melton: Badham, Cooper, Durant, Eggleston, Fielding, Higgs, Long, Kemp, Lyne, Mabbutt, McNally-Reilly, Norgate, Prior R, Pszenyczniak, Rennie, Tinsley, Vamplew, Wakefield, White, Wood, Woolley.
