TUESDAY, noon: A great all-round team performance saw Melton Mowbray destroy second-placed Desford.
Leics Senior League Division One
MELTON MOWBRAY 4 DESFORD 1

The game started at a frantic pace with Desford asking early questions, but Melton defenders Ryan Franklin and Tom Weller answering them with very important tackles. Rob Grant was commanding in the air and Matt Catton made an excellent diving save.

Melton used their extra man in midfield to attack on the break. Rob Aldridge's good ball put Ben Stainsby clear and his good shot across the keeper from just inside the 18-yard box made it 1-0.

Aldridge brilliantly controlled a high ball, but screwed his shot wide from close range.

Mann, Skipper and Hill did well in central midfield, and when Melton won a corner, Simon Hill's excellent delivery found Rob Grant who powered a header goalwards and Stainsby added the final touch to double the lead.

Simon Snow replaced the injured Gary Kitchen as Desford pressed, but again Melton's defence gave nothing away.

Melton had a penalty appeal turned down after Stainsby and Aldridge linked well and Aldridge was fouled.

After half-time, Melton were again tested, Catton making excellent interceptions and another awesome save.

But from Hill's excellent free kick into the area, the ball flicked off a defender into the far corner of the net.

Desford still came forward, but Lee Mann looked very strong. Aldridge chased down a short back pass and nipped in front of the keeper to finish into an empty net for his 11th of the season to cap Mowbray's scoring.

Simon Snow glided past two defenders before cutting into the box and forcing a fine save with Skipper's rebound denied by another good save.

With 15 minutes left Catton again saved well before Desford scored with a header. The S&J Haulage man-of-the-match: award went to the whole team.
