MONDAY, 3pm: Melton HC Thirds had the majority of the play against a surprisingly strong Nuneaton languishing at the bottom of the table but in the end succumbed to 2 breakaway goals.

In the absence of skipper Seb Harrison veteran Leeman led Melton's largely youthful team.

Melton took control from the start but couldn't find their finishing touch against some physical defending.

Against the run of play Nuneaton took the lead with a swift counter-attack. Nuneaton resorted to some desperate defence and after a deliberate shoulder charge in the D were temporarily reduced to 10 men.

Melton stuck to their guns and Leeman scored with a fierce strike for a deserved equaliser. It looked as if Melton would get a point until a mistake by the otherwise impressive Tom Dymond let Nuneaton in for the winner.

This was a very entertaining game played in the evening mists of Melton.

Melton's veteran defence had to work hard to contain their youthful opponents and it took all of Linton's experience to deny them an early goal.

Westleigh did take the lead when their surprisingly skilful playmaker set up a chance. With Melton having to press forward Westleigh broke away for another score.

Mullard was impressive on Melton's right wing and created the chance to reduce the arrears when he fed Cuthill whose shot was illegally stopped but the resulting flick was too close to the keeper.

Melton did get one back when Snow's short corner strike again hit a foot and he duly dispatched the flick.

However Westleigh were always dangerous and another flowing move left Lintin with no chance. To their credit Melton persevered and Hewitt was unlucky to see his shot fly narrowly wide. Melton did get another back when Cuthill's clever flick flew into the top corner.

Melton: D.Lintin, M.Curtis, B.Elkin, G.Weatherdon, N.Buttery, T.Humm, S.Mullard, T.Wills, J.Hewitt, H.Snow, A.Cuthill, P.Scott.
