Melton GC junior Smith takes ladies' golf day honours

SATURDAY, 4pm: Melton Golf Club Drina Terzza staged her popular Lady Captain's Day which was preceded by 50 of the men competing in an individual stableford.
A total of 30 ladies competed in a main 18-hole individual stableford, with a nine-hole competition following.

Despite very windy conditions, some excellent scores were returned with 17-year-old Catherine Smith winning overall after an outstandin
g five-under handicap score of 42 points.

First Division winners: Denise Waldron, Peggy Newton, Fay Hutton. Division Two: Chris Cook, Kullike Dempster, Jeanette Holland. Division Three: Peggy Coy, Beryl Houghton, Margaret Ringham, Janet Walden. Past lady captains' winners: Val Eastman, Margaret Hoskins. Junior girls: Leah Radford. Nine-hole winner: Di Ward. Provisional handicap: Sarah Copley.

*Brian Haines won the men's competition from runner-up Phil Curtis and Daniel Law. George Archer won the junior prize and David Poolan the mystery prize.
The putting competition was won by Jamie Graham which raised £71 for the junior section.

*The club held its annual Junior Open/Daily Telegraph Qualifier last Tuesday which brought out 83 young golfers from 30 clubs. Despite wind and rain, great scores were carded with half of the competitors single figure golfers.

Junior Open results:- Overall winner: Tom Rowe (Scraptoft) 62. Best gross (boy): Oliver Walmesley (Cosby) 72ocb; (girl): Hannah Mulliner (Northampton) 73.
Under 18s: 1 Liam Hurst (Scraptoft) 67; 2 Tom Caldicott (Greetham Valley) 69; best gross: Tim Hickman (Glen Gorse) 73.
Under 16s: 1 Christopher Cooper (Louth) 66ocb; 2 Sam Pollard (Melton) 66; best gross: Ashley Mason (Glen Gorse) 72.
Under 14s: 1 George Boddy (Melton) 66; 2 Niall Jarvis (Scraptoft) 68; best gross: Jordan Burdall (Greetham Valley) 80.
Nearest the pin – 5th: Scott Evans (Scraptoft); 7th: Kieran Foster (Melton); 14th: Hannah Mulliner (Northampton); 16th: Niall Jarvis (Scraptoft). Best girl nett: Kate Frankham (Lutterworth) 72.
Daily Telegraph Championship qualifiers – Boys' best gross: Oliver Walmesley; girls' best gross: Hannah Mulliner.

*Melton juniors contested the Keightley Kerr Putter and an eagle two on the long final hole gave Nick Pattinson the win ahead of Alex Austin and third-placed David Poolan. Tom Copley pipped James Parker by one shot in the nine-hole competition.

*The seniors travelled to Toft but suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat. John Parker and Tom Hall were Melton's only winners by 5 and 3.

*The ladies' LGU Medal on Wednesday was well-supported, Kathie Finn winning the silver division with net 77 from lady vice-captain Peggy Newton a point back on countback from Jane Berry.

Dorothy Jaggers (net 76ocb) won bronze division one from Brenda Williams (net 76), while Janet Hipkin (net 70) won bronze division two with a one-under handicap score ahead of Barbara Hamston.

*The ladies' team hosted a handicap match against Willesley Park on Monday and beat their strong opponents 3-0.
Scores: Chris Cook/Drina Terzza won 3 and 2; Fay Hutton/Dorothy Jaggers won 5 and 4; Jean Moulds/Anne Creed won 2-up.

*The ladies' Scratch League team were well beaten 6-1 at Lutterworth, Catherine Smith the only Melton winner by 4 and 3.
