WEDNESDAY, noon: Family honour will be at stake when Melton mother and daughter Trudy and Gemma Smith compete at the 2008 NFA Ladies' National Angling Championships this weekend.
They will be among more than 60 anglers from around the country who will gather at Lakeview Fisheries at Holwell where this year's event is being held.

The sports mad pair, who are both involved with Asfordby Amateurs Ladies and Girls FC, will be
vying for the title of national crown.

It may be Gemma's national debut, but she will be getting help from her dad Gene who is lending her a pole.

Trudy said: "This will be the second time I have fished the nationals and first time for Gemma who is only 15. It will be a challenge for her as she is pretty good at fishing."

Lakeview Fisheries is one of the most well known fisheries in the country, so anglers will have to be at their best to gain an advantage over their competitors.

The approach needed to do well on there is to fish mainly pellet, but if the temperature heats up, casters may be preferable.

The ladies will need to reel in hauls of well over the 100lb mark, with the average winning weight of recent hauls being about 150lbs.

Lakeview manager Emily Pursslove said: "It's very exciting to have the ladies here and to raise female anglers' awareness of the fishery as a place they can come and fish.

"Hopefully the competition will get some great coverage and help encourage more women to take up the sport."

Lakeview will also have a contingent of its own members gunning for the title including Ann Yates and Sammie Perkins.
