Kay Knight prevails as champions battle it out at Melton Golf Club

SUNDAY, 1pm: Champions past and present battled it out for the Melton Golf Club Ladies' Championship over 36 holes.
Going out in handicap order for the morning round, defending champion Catherine Smith and former champion Kay Knight led the way.

The afternoon round began with the highest scores playing first, leaving the morning leaders to come in last as Kay, Kathie Finn and Catherine tussled for the title

Kay regained her club champion tag with a combined gross 172 over 36 holes from Kathie Finn (177) and third-placed Catherine Smith (181).

The best nett competition was won by junior and 20-handicapper Leah Radford from runner-up Kathie and Kay in third. She returned a net 76 in the morning and a five-under handicap net 67 in the afternoon for a combined score of 143.

This earned her a further two-shot handicap reduction, her second such cut in the last two weeks.

*The ladies section also played the Ping fourball betterball in heavy rain and winds. Kay Knight and Leah Radford won with 37 points from Maureen Stapleford and Jean Moulds (34pts ocb).

*One of the best fields of the year saw 103 compete in a men's Saturday Stableford in breezy conditions.

Results:- Overall winner: Guy Rayson (42pts). Division One: 1 Haydn Snow (41); 2 Chris Ward 38ocb. Division Two: 1 Paul Green 37pts; 2 Mick Pollard 36. Division Three: 1 Nick Baines 39pts; 2 Billy Kevan 37. Twos scored: Peter Poolan, Chris Leader, Paul Blount, Chris ward, Greg Woolley, Barrie Hubbard, Ben Day, John Webb, Dave Compton, Ian Solloway.

*The Sunday Medal also resulted in superb scores with Chris Leader's net 64 winning the day from Lee Wilson (net 67) who also won best gross with a level gross 70. Greg Woolley was third on countback from Steve Tagg, both shooting a net 68.

Twos sweep: Peter Keast, Peter Poolan, Ray Smith, Bill Hurrell Sam Pollard, Dale Radford.
