THURSDAY, noon: Chess talent Katie Hale faced the world's best young players across the board as England's sole chosen representative.
Katie, from Melton, took part in the 12-day World Youth Championships in Turkey in the girls' under 18s competition.
The Melton Chess Club member finished with four wins from her 11 matches which left her in a final position of 57th out of the 65 players.
These stats reflected the calibre of players Katie (pictured right with sister Stephanie) was up against, having gone into the event ranked in 61st place.
She had a difficult start, securing only one point from the first five rounds which was a bye, although could well have won a marathon second round game in which she was eventually forced to resign on the 105th move.
Katie received a bye in round three and then in the fourth round reached a winning ending with three extra pawns in a Queen and Knight ending, but failed to notice her queen was attacked and left it to be taken.
In round six Katie clinched her first win having co- ordinated her pieces well.
Katie had another eventful game in round seven and found it hard to settle on the right plan. She took the initiative, but just when a win looked likely she blundered a bishop, but Katie took enough pawns to force a draw.
After two more defeats in rounds eight and nine Katie won easily in round 10 against a girl from Macau and in the final round she played aggressively to earn a draw.
Overall a mixed tournament, but she had plenty of chances for more points and will take invaluable experience to prepare her for future England outings.
