Juniors help Hamilton men's First team to victory

SATURDAY, 3pm: Hamilton Tennis Club's men's first team scored another good win with a 6-3 victory over Carisbrooke C.
Youngsters Ed Blake and Peter Thorpe led the team and Steve Wallace and Alex Mayhew and Dave Palmer and Tom Keep (left) provided support.

*The ladies' second team beat Oakham 7-2 with three members of the third team performing very well. Rosie Gildove and Jenny Golland won a maximum three sets.

*Scores: Rosie Gildove/Jenny Golland W 9-1, 9-3, 9-1; Sue Corfield/Beth Lowe W 9-5, 9-3, L 4-9; Lesley Greaves/Cindy Coulter W 9-8, 9-8, L 5-9.

*The ladies' third team were crushed 9-0 by Houghton Firsts after losing three players to the second team.

Scores: Eileen Merrison/Pat Woolston L 0-9, 3-9, 1-9; Di Green/Fay Bidwell L 1-9, 1-9, 2-9; Margaret Wright/Brenda Langridge L 1-9, 0-9, 0-9.

*The ladies' fourth team lost 7-2 to Leicestershire E, Margaret Heggs and Chris Stevens winning the two sets.

Scores: Margaret Heggs/Chris Stevens W 9-3, L 8-9, W 9-7; Brenda Langridge/ Margaret Wright L 2-9, 7-9, 5-9; Helen Preston/ Jude Plumb L 3-9, 1-9, 2-9.

*The ladies' veterans first team beat Syston Northfields 5-3 after Cindy Coulter and Lesley Greaves won the last set on a nailbiting tie-break.

Scores: Di Green/Margaret Roskell W 6-4, 6-3; D 6-3, 5-7. Cindy Coulter/Lesley Greaves D 6-3, 4-6; D 5-7, 7-6.

*The ladies' veterans second team had an even closer match with Leicestershire 2 in a 4-4 draw. Margaret Heggs and Chris Stevens drew both of theirs, but were delighted to finally end their tie-break jinx.

Scores: Lesley Greaves/Janet Gilchrist L 1-6, 2-6; W 6-2, 6-4. Margaret Heggs/ Christine Stevens D 7-6, 4-6; D 4-6, 7-5.

*Hamilton is holding an open weekend on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13.

Saturday will be for juniors and Sunday morning for adults. Equipment is provided, but trainers and suitable clothing are required.

The junior tennis will be complemented by events to raise money for a cystic fibrosis charity.
