FRIDAY, 1pm: Year 7 and 8 teams went head-to-head at sportshall athletics for the right to represent the Melton and Belvoir School Sport Partnership at next month's Inter-SSP event.
Individuals had to complete up to three track and two field events, with the highest-placed girls and boys teams from each year group then qualifying for the county round.
After a very tight competition, organised through the Competition Manager Programme, hosts John Ferneley won all four categories by just a few points.
Notable performances in the Year 7s included Shanice Archer (John Ferneley) who ran the six-lap race (12 lengths of the sportshall) in just 52 seconds, and Louella Reeder of Belvoir High School, who achieved 39cm in the vertical jump.
Will Newton, of John Ferneley, meanwhile jumped a massive 5m 31cms in the standing triple jump.
In the Year 8s, Emily Hollis (Long Field) won with a distance of 1m 97cms in the standing long jump.
Josh Limbrick (King Edward VII) ran four lengths in 24.15secs, and Will Knatt (Long Field) got 103 jumps on the 30-second speed bounce.
* Melton school pupils have been honing their football skills with a different version of the beautiful game.
As part of the CMP, Melton secondary schools Long Field, John Ferneley and King Edward VII College, as well as Uppingham Community College, have been taking each other on at Futsal over the last four weeks.
Futsal is a new variation on the original indoor five-a-side football game, using a heavier ball, sidelines and smaller goals.
Futsal was designed to focus on improving players' individual skills as well as technique.
Adam Holyoake, of Leicester-Shire and Rutland FA, provided them with a Futsal kit bag each and rules booklets.
Adam and Stamford FC's Ian Evley, also provided high quality refereeing and invited the players along to the club's thriving Futsal section.
The competitions have proved very successful with John Ferneley topping three of the girls' four age groups, and King Edward VII taking the other.
In the boys competitions, the age groups were shared two apiece by Long Field and Uppingham.
* Melton and Belvoir secondary schools competed in four qualifying cricket competitions last term to represent their partnership at this year's Competition Manager Inter-School Sport Partnership event.
The boys took part in the six-a-side inter-cricket competitions at both under 13s and under 15s, and the girls played the eight-a-side Lady Taverners cricket rules at the same age groups.
Long Field fielded strong teams who won both girls' qualifiers and the boys Under 15s, but they were denied a clean sweep by Belvoir High School who qualified for the boys Under 13s.
The inter-school sports partnership round will be played at Leicestershire CCC Academy next month.
