In-form Alex lands pairs golf success

SATURDAY, 5pm: A small field of 70 played in Melton Golf Club's Men's Invitation Day.
Playing a betterball stableford some excellent scores were returned.
A score of 43 points was returned by the winning pair of Alex Cooper (Melton – pictured) and Craig Hallam (Stoke Rochford) on countback on the back nine from Steve Goddard and Mick Car (Scraptoft).
Haydn Snow and John Holland (Rothley) were third with 41 points from Bernard Jamieson and Dave Skerritt (Greetham Valley) on countback over the back nine.
Best gross winners were Ian Plant and Bob Griffin (Stoke Rochford), nearest-the-pin was Barrie Hubbard (Melton) and longest drive was Alex Cooper.
*The second team hosted Cotgrave Place on Thursday, winning by four games to two.
Melton winners: John Squires and Paul Robinson (2-up), Al Terzza and Nick Pattison (5 and 3), Terry Brown and Pete Rayers (2 and 1), Matt Hatton and Alan Tales (7 and 6).
*The third team also played a home fixture against Greetham Valley which also resulted in a 4-2 home victory.
Melton winners: Richard Haines and Billy Kevan (2 and 1), Vic Cooper and Don Benzie (4 and 2), Bev Blake and John Swayne (4 and 3), David Mckain and Alan Brough (1-up).
*The seniors visited Cotgrave Place for a match and lost 6-2.
The highlight of the match was a hole-in-one for Melton's Bill Robson on the par three 10th hole, his first ace after 26 years of golf.
Melton winners: Bill Robson and Dave Beasley (5 and 4), senior captain Ron Middleton and Vic Newham (2 and 1).
*The ladies played for the Christine Lord Trophy last week. The trophy, donated in memory of past lady captain and president Christine Lord by Nora Johnson and Gwen Griffiths, is a popular fixture on the ladies' calendar.
Played as a betterball fourball, lady president Gwen Doyle and partner Gladys Bryson won with a score of 40 points followed three points behind in second by Pam Parker and Jeanette Holland.
Kathie Finn and Janet Hipkin were third with 36 points.
*The senior ladies' team met Beedles Lake Ladies in a friendly match at Melton on Friday.
The match was halved after a close contest.
Melton winners: Margaret Hoskins and Gladys Bryson (4 and 2), Sheila Rowson and Barbara Hamston (8 and 7).
