SATURDAY, 5pm: Boos and plastic bottles rained down as world champion Thai boxer Iman Barlow was controversially denied victory in Bangkok last week.
Iman, from Melton, has become a star in Thailand where the sport is as popular as football is here, and once again she was asked to fight in a prestigious event to mark the Queen of Thailand's birthday.

The 16-year-old's bout was the main event on the bill as she took on the current Thai women's number one Denerpar over four rounds under full Thai rules with elbows and knees to the face allowed.

Iman had beaten the Thai girl two years ago on points, but the in-form home fighter had improved with bookmakers offering 20-1 for an Iman victory.

After a tentative first round from both fighters, Iman upped the pace and took the second round, constantly pushing her opponent back with front kicks and knees.

Round three also went the Melton schoolgirl's way as she again pushed forward, forcing her opponent to back off.

All Iman seemingly had to do to win the fight was stay on her feet during the final round, but having done so, the judges' decision went against her, prompting boos and plastic bottles missiles from a disgruntled crowd.

She was interviewed, live on Thai TV which was also broadcast in New Zealand, Australia and the Fox Network in the United States. Her next fight pits her against the Dutch champion in Eindhoven, Holland on September 27.

Iman's younger brother Thai (12) was also in action in Bangkok as part of the Barlow family's annual trip to the Thai capital for seven week's training in the world famous Jitti's Gym.

He faced another Bangkok fighter and after an even opening round, the Thai picked up the pace and threw strong kicks which Thai blocked or evaded. Round three saw both fighters swap blows with Thai landing some excellent right-handers.

Thai continued to move forward during the final round, matching the Thai with power and technique. He came in close and with 30 seconds left one knee to the ribs put his opponent down and earned the Melton boy a knockout win.

*Thai boxing training for beginners has returned in Melton on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm and Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm. For more details, ring Mark on (01664) 567491.
