WEDNESDAY, 11am: Holwell Sports won the Melton Times Charity Cup for the third year running, but were pushed all the way by arch rivals Asfordby Amateurs.
Holwell won a tempestuous cup final at Welby Road last night on a penalty shoot-out after the game finished goalless at the end of normal time which produced few clear-cut chances for either side.
Asfordby created several half-chances to score, while Holwell's former Asfordby striker Scott Mooney hit the bar with a superb overhead kick in an otherwise tight and tense affair.
After a hard-fought 90 minutes, Asfordby had a chance to win on penalties after Oliver Freckingham's spot-kick was saved, but Amateurs' decisive fifth penalty missed the target.
Asfordby already thought they had won the tie beforehand when Holwell's Rich Surtees shoot-out penalty was saved. But the linesman adjudged the keeper to be off his line and the referee ordered the penalty to be re-taken, Surtees converting at the second attempt.
Into sudden death, the wheels came off for Asfordby as Holwell keeper Dave Gordon saved their first attempt, allowing youth player Matt Hendey to keep cool and convert the winning penalty.
It spelled heartbreak for Asfordby who were edged out in the final for the third year running.
But Stu Dealey's men still have the consolation of the Leics Senior League Division One title to reflect on over the summer after dominating the league and Senior League Premier football to look forward to.
The next aim for the ambitious Hoby Road club will be to win a place in the newly-formed East Midlands Counties League, which Holwell will join next season, through promotion from the Premier.
For Holwell it capped a highly satisfying and promising season. The first XI finished fourth in the Premier under boss Simon Daws, their best position for three seasons.
There is also strength in depth with their reserves having pipped Asfordby to the second promotion spot in Leics Combination Division Two and won the League Cup last Thursday.
Holwell's youth team also had an outstanding season, winning the Midweek Youth Floodlit League South Division.
*The newly-formed Cyril Sisson Man-of-the-Match Award, named in memory of the late Charity Cup Committee member, went to Holwell midfielder Niall Prenderville, while Holwell's own man-of-the-match award, sponsored by Roger Hodson, was keeper Dave Gordon.
