Saffron came to Asfordby Hill knowing they needed full points from their final two games to pip Holwell for fourth spot, but found Holwell's defence tough to crack, Rob Aldridge in particular hardly putting a foot wrong alongside the impressive Anthony Snelgrove.
And young Nat Price had a solid game up front in his first full game for the senior team.
Holwell dominated early on with half-chances for Andy Teare and Mooney, but it Saffron nearly grabbed the lead when Gunn's header from a free kick looked destined for the corner of the net, only for Rich Gordon to pull off a great save, diving to his right.
Mooney saw his shot well smothered by keeper Harris, but the striker wasn't to be denied and when the home side won a corner on the left on 25 minutes, Fred Stannard put in a fine cross for him to glance home a super near post header.
Saffron came more into game, but more good defending and another fine save by Gordon from Knight's volley kept Holwell in front at the break.
Mooney and Stannard missed chances after the break before the visitors had their best spell, putting the home defence under some pressure. But they coped well, with the confident Gordon showing excellent handling and another fine save from Hobson's header.
Holwell began to piece together some good football themselves, with Teare shooting just wide, Mooney seeing his shot deflected for a corner and Snelgrove's header from Stannard's corner smacking against the bar.
Holwell's man-of-the-match, sponsored by Roger Hodson, was Rob Aldridge.
Holwell: R. Gordon, T. Richards, O. Freckingham, A. Snelgrove (c), R. Aldridge, S. Smith, N. Prenderville, A. Teare, S. Mooney, F. Stannard, N. Price.
