MONDAY, noon: Holwell Sports FC were edged out 2-1 in both their latest pre-season friendlies against higher league opposition.
Last Wednesday Quorn, who play in the Unibond South, made the short trip to Asfordby Hill and made a great start with a headed goal in the first minute from a corner.

They added another virtually from the second half kick-off, but in between Holwell missed chances that could have wrapped the game up, Scott Mooney and Rob Aldridge missing one-on-ones and Dave Gordon volleying wide of an open goal.

But the home side were finally rewarded for their hard-working performance in the final 10 minutes when Niall Prenderville swept in a low cross from the left wing.

Holwell travelled to neat Uttoxeter on Saturday to take on Rocester, who last season finished fourth in the Midland Alliance.

They enjoyed an excellent first half and took the lead when Fred Stannard threaded a pass down the right to Mooney. He cut back inside the fullback before crossing to the penalty spot where Michael Stevenson bagged his first goal for the club with a spectacular overhead kick.

Rocester equalised before half-time with a glancing header from a free kick and then took the lead after the break with a fine shot from the edge of the area.

Although Holwell found it hard to recapture their first half performance they kept the home side on their toes with some good football and were unlucky not to share the spoils.
