FRIDAY 1PM: Melton Mowbray Golf Club had a busy weekend with the Ladies' Open Am-Am on Friday and Lions Charity Golf Day on Sunday.
The ladies' am-am was very well supported with 156 taking part, playing in teams of four with two scores to count on all holes except the ninth and 18th where all four scores counted. Refreshments were served at the halfway house by male members of t
he club including club captain Mick Curtis.

The weather was fine and warm and some excellent scores were returned, with only four points separating the top five places and first and second decided by countback over the back nine holes.

First with 83 points were the Lutterworth Loungers, all members of Lutterworth GC, just beating the Queen Bees (Radcliffe-on-Trent GC) into second.

In third place were the Northampton Nutters, from Northampton GC, with 81, followed in fourth by the last team out, The Last Post, members of Melton Mowbray, with 80. Fifth place also went to Melton members Town and Country with 79.

Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Jools Barker (Lutterworth) and on the 14th hole Elspeth Thomas (Brampton Park).

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one scored by Ann Burbidge, from Bedford, on the par three seventh hole. Ann took a six iron to shoot over the bunker protecting the front of the green and was delighted to see it roll into the hole, positioned at the back of the green.

Instead of buying everyone a drink Ann made a £50 donation to the lady captain's charity – First Responders.

Money was also raised for the lady captain's charity by holding a raffle which, combined with donations made at the halfway house, raised just under £400. Lady captain Drina Terzza was delighted at the amount donated.

* Over the last two weeks the ladies have played the President's Putter. Played over two rounds and two consecutive weeks in a medal format, 28 ladies took part and overall winner of the putter based on the combined scores was Maureen Stapleford with a net 146 (74 and 72).
Winner of the first round best net was Gwen Doyle with 72 and the best net on the second week was Jeanette Holland with 73.

* The senior ladies played a friendly match against Scraptoft at Melton on Monday and won 4-0.

Lady president Gwen Doyle captained the match and along with her partner Barbara Hamston won her game by 9 and 8. Jean Moulds and Joyce McLaren won 7 and 6, Janet Hipkin and Sheila Rowson won 3 and 2 and Janet Bentley and Margaret Hoskins won 5 and 4.

* The ladies team played a friendly match at home against Lingdale last Thursday and won 3-1. Melton's winning pairs were Janet Bentley and Joyce McLaren (5 and 4), Gay Cham with Chris Cook (3 and 2) and Maureen Stapleford with Margaret Hoskins.

* The senior section also played a home match last week against Radcliffe-on-Trent, but were beaten 4½ to 3½.

At one time it looked like Melton could be whitewashed as the first four teams out all lost, however the back end of the field saved the day by all winning or halving.

Successful Melton pairs were Peter Maine with Brian Grommett (6 and 4), John Eastman and Mike Huggins (3 and 2) and Neville Palmer and Dave Beasley (3 and 2). Alan Terzza with Malcolm Bryson got the half.

* The men's section played for the better ball team trophy, the Greenall Cup, with 48 taking part.

Owen Cook and Tom Eadon won the trophy with 43 points, while runners-up Sam Tait and Dale Radford were one point behind with 42 and a further point back in third place with 41 were Steve Brown and Martin Wheeler.

* Only a small field of 29 players played in the midweek medal last Tuesday.

John Squires was the winner with a net 64 and runner-up Paul Blount was only one shot behind. Third was Neil Eaves with 68 and Lee Wilson was fourth with 71. Lee also got the best gross of the day with a gross 74.

There were only two competitors to share the twos sweep, Alex Cooper and Alan Newton.

* The junior section's Ray Elsome final was played on Saturday.
George Boddy made the early running and was four up after nine holes but a terrific back nine from Sam Pollard gave him victory on the 18th hole.
