TUESDAY, 1pm: Stuart Broad has been dropped from the England squad for the third Test match against South Africa.
The former Egerton Park cricketer was named in a 13-man squad on Saturday, but this morning he and the recalled Steve Harmison were omitted from the final XI which will start the match at Edgbaston tomorrow.

The decision to end Broad's run of seven consecutive Test match resulted from fears of burnout for the 22-year-old which has affected his bowling.

Broad, who grew up in Waltham-on-the-Wolds and Whissendine, has been in superb form with the bat for England.

He has an overall Test average of 40 and tops their batting averages in the current series with 80, despite going in at number eight.

But, while he is one of England's top bowlers in One Day Internationals, he has struggled to take wickets in recent Test matches.

After assessing the pitch in Birmingham, England's chief selector Geoff Miller opted for an extra batsmen with Paul Collingwood returning in Broad's place after a poor batting display cost England the second Test.

Talking after Saturday's squad announcement, Miller hinted Broad was due for a break: "He's tired - he has had some very intense cricket with back-to-back Test matches. It is a learning curve for him.

"We have all seen what he can do with the bat, but what he needs to do now as far as I'm concerned is to look how to get Test match wickets on flat, unresponsive wickets.

"He is strong enough as a person and willing to go out and do that."
