FRIDAY, 1pm: Melton archer Lauren McPherson sampled the sport at the very highest level at the FITA Youth World Championships in Antalya, Turkey this week.
Lauren, who turned 14 just days before flying out to the competition, was given a stark reminder of the quality she was up against in the recurve cadets women's competition for under 16s.

She was the only British cadet girl to win a head-to-head match, earning her a final ranking of 63rd. Of her more experienced team-mates, Stewart finished 60th and Harwood 76th.

Dad Darren said: "As fas as we know she kept her nerve and shot well. We are really proud of her and her coaches were over the moon with her performances.

"She sent me a text which said 'The worlds are a very big and scary place, but I love it'.

"She has done extremely well in whjat was her first international match and will be determined to progress."

The first two days of competition decided individual rankings ahead of Thursday's head-to-head shoot-offs.

The first two days ended with a Korean one-two and a new world record as Su Ji Lim finished with a combined total of 1,377 over the four rounds, while the top Koreans all shot incredibly high scores which beat all of those shot by the British women's team at the Olympics earlier this year.

Lauren, the youngest member of the British team, was sent to the competition to gain experience of top level archery and finished with a ranking of 68th, a place behind her compatriot Cas Harwood.

Remaining team-mate Hannah Stewart was the highest placed of the trio, finishing 33rd with a score of 1,260.

This left the British team 18th and out of the top 16 finish needed to qualify for today's team tournament.

Lauren was not finished there and in the first round of the head-to-head competition was up against an American opponent who had shot 70 points more than her.

But the Melton schoolgirl remained unphased, shooting 89 out of 120, beating the American's score of 81.

Lauren then faced the tournament fourth seed in the next round, a Russian opponent who shot a superb 107, compared to the Brit's consistent score of 85.
