FRIDAY 9AM: The junior football season kicked off on Sunday and here is a round-up of some of the matches.
Leics Youth League U/16s Premier
ASFORDBY AMATEURS 2 SAFFRON DYNAMO 1

FACING last season's champions, Amateurs demonstrated skill and determination to take all the points.

Patrick Reading missed an early penalty but on the half-hour, Tom Wheeler opened the scoring from an Ollie Heaver through ball.
Into the second half the visitors pressured but the back line of Catlin, Uttley, Baker, man-of-the-match Matt Porter and keeper Sam Mayfield held firm. Matt Houghton sent Chris Payne through to double the lead and James Porter was only denied by an excellent save. With five minutes left Saffron pulled one back but it was too little, too late.

Asfordby: S. Mayfield, B. Catlin, P. Reading, W. Wells (c) O. Heaver, M. Houghton, J. Forfar, T. Wheeler, J. Porter, M. Porter, J. Baker, T. Uttley, K. Foster, C. Payne.

MOWBRAY RANGERS 4 WIGSTON 1

MOWBRAY'S new-look team made an impressive start to the season on Sunday.

Fielding a mixture of last season's Leicester and Grantham League players, Rangers missed a host of chances and then paid the price when Wigston took the lead from a quick break. But the home side kept plugging away and right on the stroke of halftime, Sam Hollis equalised with a fine lob over the keeper.

Mowbray took complete control of the second half and soon went ahead when Sam Herbert's persistence out on the left set up Simon Alcott to score with a low shot into the corner. Hollis fired in his second to put the result beyond doubt and Ollie Fisher added a fourth with a tap-in following a goalmouth scramble.

Mowbray: C. Musson, D. Street (O. Wallis), K. Taylor, N. Pattison, B. Channing, O. Fisher, S. Alcott, O. Hall ©, S. Herbert (S. Pollard), T. Smallridge (M. Hendy), S. Hollis.

WHETSTONE JUNIORS 4 WALTHAM JUNIORS 3

WALTHAM'S first game in the new league was a thriller.

They were rocked early on when they conceded a harsh penalty but Ben Freer soon equalised from a corner. Waltham were now creating some good chances only to be foiled by fine saves from the keeper before sloppy defending allowed Whetstone to score two quick goals.

Changes at half-time soon paid dividends when a great through ball from Mason set man-of-the-match Adam Hutton free to pull a goal back. Waltham now were in complete control but the Whetstone keeper again made stunning saves from Hutton, MacGregor and Bowley.

Although another penalty restored Whetstone's two-goal lead, Waltham fought back and Green's through ball put Hutton clear to bag his second.

Waltham: A. Jones, B. Freer, L. Burrows (c), J. Mason, E. Bowley, L. Potts, A. Cragg, R. Green, C. Bibby, C. MacGregor, A. Hutton. Subs: S. Sterry, R. Brown, R. Ludbrook.

ASFORDBY AMATEURS 5 BARWELL & BURBAGE 0

A HAT-trick from Leah Radford set up a fine win for Asfordby.

They had most of the possession in the first half forcing many corners but just couldn't find the back of the net until Griffin scored after some well-worked play. The game began to pick up and Asfordby took control with a goal from Allen and two from Radford.

The second half was battle against the weather, but Barwell were kept at bay by a strong defence and a brilliant keeper. Radford scored again to complete her hat-trick.

Asfordby: G. Miller, V. Groom, H. Wills, B. Wood, E. Williams, C. Griffin, R. Brown, L. Radford, K. Spicer, G. Fare, T. Allen, K. Hollins.

Leicester Juniors U/15s
MOWBRAY RANGERS 4 LOUGHBOROUGH DYNAMO 2

RANGERS took an early lead through Luke Darlington, and the second wasn't long in coming when Ed Fryer converted a free kick. Man-of-the-match keeper Adam Gilbert was kept busy as Mowbray got caught on the back foot, but he showed a great level of confidence. Luke Atkinson then set up Darlinton to make it 3-0 at half-time.

Loughborough came out fighting and soon pulled it back to 3-2. Rangers picked up the pace and a long throw-in was well finished by Danny Cooley to round off the scoring. Good midfield play from Kyle Carr and

Nathan Jones meant Mowbray kept possession to see out the game.

Mowbray: A. Gilbert,D. Cooley, E. Miller(c), E. Fryer, J. Laughton, J. Ketteringham, K. Carr, L. Atkinson, L. Darlington, N. Jones, J. Perfect. Subs; D. Wardhaugh, A. Adams, L. Platkiw, P. Fowkes.

ASFORDBY AMATEURS 3 STOKE GOLDING 2

ASFORDBY got off to a good start and soon found their shooting boots through Ryan Young. Golding equalised but the home side continued to play good football and were rewarded with further goals from Ryan Martin and Young. With minutes remaining Golding added a second to give a flattering scoreline.

Asfordby: C. Naylor, D. Truman, J. Power, J. Wright, E. Walker, J. Upton, R. Tilley, T. Adams, Z. Waddington, R. Martin, R. Young (c), J. Brown, K. Cubitt, P. Lambert.

OADBY OWLS 1 MELTON FOXES 1

FOXES made a flying start when Woodall volleyed in Sharples' cross after only two minutes. But they let Oadby back into the match when a defensive mix-up allowed the forward to run through unchallenged.

Picker then pulled off a superb save when one-on-one.

Foxes had the better of the second half with Sharples, Knatt and Allen controlling midfield and Woodall running the Oadby left-back ragged.

Anderson was unlucky not to score after he outpaced the Oadby defence, while the home side almost grabbed the points when a speculative shot hit the bar.

Foxes: J. Picker, C. Power, T. Jones, O. Anderson, J. Hyman, J. Knatt, J. Sharples, C. Allen, T. Pope, G. Woodall, A. Austin, S. Gackowski, T. Jinks.

Leicester Juniors U/14C
MOWBRAY RANGERS 2 GILMORTON JUNIORS 3

EARLY skirmishes were all in Gilmorton's favour as Mowbray struggled to find any rhythm and it wasn't long before the visitors took the lead.

Mowbray failed to capitalise on their limited chances and it was Gilmorton who stretched their lead with a superb strike. However, Tom Barnard pulled one back just before half-time.

Mowbray picked up the pace but it was Gilmorton who scored again from a free kick. The home side hit back with some great moves down the left involving Daniel Green, Barnard and Kierran Browne and their dominance finally paid off when Nathan Gray pulled one back.

Good defending, in particular from Billy Orridge, kept Gilmorton out, but Mowbray just couldn't find the deserved equaliser.

Leicester Juniors U/14s Division Three
ASFORDBY AMATEURS 5 WIGSTON YOUTH 0

ASFORDBY started strongly with Ross Dunlop and Jordan Ring both having early chances before Jordan Blythe outpaced the defence to open the scoring.

One of the best moves of the game involving keeper Macauley Irish, Liam Sharpley, Mitchell Noble, Dunlop and Liam Cooley ended with Ben Weston heading home.

In the second half, good work by Sam Lyons and Ben Weston set up Dunlop to make it 3-0, and within minutes Asfordby increased their lead with a solo effort from Weston. And it was Weston who rounded off the scoring with his hat-trick after his shot was spilled by the keeper. Jack Carvell came on in the second half and earned the man-of-the match award.

Asfordby: J. Blythe, J. Carvell, L. Cooley, R. Dunlop, C. Hebb, M. Irish, S. Lyons, M. Noble, M. Odiam, J. Ring, L. Sharpley, B. Weston.

ASFORDBY AMATEURS 3 EPWORTH FOREST 2
A WELL-balanced first half brought no goals, but early in the second, Thomas Sharpe-Reynolds smartly followed up a rebound to open the scoring for Asfordby.

The home side stepped up the pressure resulting in a second goal from new signing Declan Sharpley.  Asfordby's defence, including man-of-the-match Reece Purkis, couldn't stop Epworth pulling one back, and then keeper Adam Hall was pushed to his limit with top draw saves to prevent the equaliser.

Sam Bullimore relieved the pressure with a well-earned third goal which was followed by a late consolation from Epworth.

Leicester Girls' League U/12s
ASFORDBY GEMS 3 BIRSTALL BELLES 0

ASFORDBY made a great start to the season with a well-deserved win.

The first 10 minutes were scrappy but Gems eventually got going with Annie Taylor, Bethany Crane and Emma Hollingworth winning the midfield battle and Maisy North finished well to give them the lead.

The introduction of Becks Vickers and Emily Moore at half-time gave fresh impetus but Gems still struggled to break down a stubborn Birstall defence. However, nerves were settled by a brilliant goal from player-of-the-match Taylor before Emily Burditt pushed up to crash in the third.

Gems: E. Moore, B. Houghton, E. Wills, E. Burditt, B. Crane(c), A. Taylor, E. Hollingworth, A. Williams, G. Lecoyte, M. North, B. Vickers.

Leicester Girls' League U/12s
ASFORDBY AMATEURS DIAMONDS 1 BIRSTALL UTD VIXENS 8

DIAMONDS held the upper hand during the first 15 minutes and were unlucky when Elliott pulled the ball back for Tait to send a shot crashing against the post.

Back came Vixens but player-of-the-match Roberts was defiant in her tackling and began to distribute the ball superbly.

On the stroke of half-time, Vixens broke to score past Ellie Roberts, but Ingall equalised with the shot of the match, picking the ball up on halfway before turning and rifling in on the half-volley from just outside the centre circle.

Vixens then took control, scoring at will with the hosts pushing further upfield searching for goals they thoroughly deserved. However, four goals in the last five minutes gave a rather unjust final scoreline.

Diamonds: E. Roberts, A. Roberts, O. Parry, C. Ingall(c), C. Tait, A. Elliott, K. Martin, A. Geeson, C. Clark.

North Leics League U/11s
COALVILLE TOWN 2 MELTON FOXES 4

IN their first competitive 11-a-side match, Foxes adapted superbly.
Although going a goal down early on, Young's through ball found Heathcote who raced on to equalise. Griffin then supplied Thurley with a similar ball to make it 2-0. Read, Young, Allen and Williamson all protected Anderson well, with Williamson in particular making a last-ditch tackle. Thurley took on three players before dispatching an unstoppable shot to put Foxes 3-1 up at half-time.

The second half again saw Foxes having the lion's share of the game with Konarski, Rushton and Griffin bossing midfield. Thurley's penalty was saved by the keeper, but Newton pounced on the loose ball and slid it across to Thurley to complete his hat-trick. Town scored late on with a well-taken goal.

Foxes: Anderson, Williamson, Read, Young, Allen, Rushton, Griffin, Konarski, Newton, Heathcote, Thurley, Taylor, Tyler, Moult.

Leicester Girls' League U/11s
ASFORDBY AMATEURS 8 BARWELL & BURBAGE UTD 2

ASFORDBY took an early lead through some good passing and soon added another as they had most of the play. Barwell pulled one back but Asfordby then took control in the second half with some nice football.

Mercedes White scored four, Jordan Reek and Shanice Archer got one each, while Faith Pickering on her debut scored twice. Rumbi McCabe and Jess Whitehead each conceded a goal but the defence of Ellen Machin and Laura Gull were outstanding.

Asfordby: R. McCabe, J. Whitehead, E. Machin, L. Gull, S. Archer, M. White, J. Reek, F. Pickering.

Leics Mutual U/9s Division 4
MOWBRAY RGRS PUMAS 2 LOUGHBOROUGH DYNAMO WHITES 0

SAM Miller and Albert Grieve forced saves from the Dynamo keeper before weathering a period of pressure, well resisted by Curtis Machin's shot blocking and the ever-present Henry Murch.

Mowbray scored when a powerful Lewis Spencer strike was parried back to him and he crossed to an unmarked Grieve who slotted home. Then, in a superb move, Spencer and Grieve combined to outwit the defence, Grieve blasting an unstoppable ball into the corner for a well-earned second.
Murch, Archie Payne and Grieve combined to release Machin but the keeper made an outstanding save to deny him. Oliver Hyde then pulled off a fine diving save to protect his clean sheet.

Mowbray: O. Hyde, H. Murch, L. Spencer, S. Miller, C. Machin, D. Evans, A. Grieve, S. Handley, A. Payne.

Leics Mutual U/9s
MOWBRAY RANGERS PANTHERS 1 THURLASTON 1

THURLASTON had a good record against Mowbray last season, but this time Panthers were just too sharp from the start and Ben Bridger hit them with a goal in the first minute after a decisive pass from Wilson Iron.

Mowbray continued to have the better of the chances but paid for not taking them when, midway through the second half, Thurlaston pinched a goal from a tight angle.

Both teams put in some stout defending, and special mention should go to the mighty battle down the Mowbray left won by man-of-the-match Adam Lomas who, with effective marking and strong tackling, negated much of the Thurlaston threat.

Mowbray: J. Brown, B. Bridger, A. Lomas, W. Iron, T. Earp, B. Harrison, C. Moore, M. Collier, F. Rutherford.

Leics Mutual U/9s
ASFORDBY AMATEURS OSPREYS 1 QUORN HOUNDS 7

HOUNDS looked a good team and their more experience eventually told. The first half was a good tussle between two sides with contrasting styles. Great defending and instinctive goalkeeping from Cole Taylor kept Quorn's tally to two, the Ospreys replying with a single goal from some slick play involving virtually the whole team, finished by Joseph Osbourne.

The second half saw Quorn add five more but, overall, it was a great display by the Ospreys with lots of positives and the scoreline perhaps was a bit harsh.

Leics Mutual U/8s
MELTON FOXES 13 BARROW HAWKS 0

FOXES blew away inexperienced Barrow, their football in midfield from Kieran White, Will Fairbrother and Scott Cragg being just too strong for the visitors.

Four goals from Scott Cragg, a hat-trick from Kyle Reek, two goals apiece from Jack Close and new signing Kieran White and one each for Daniel Belcher and Dominic Forrester sealed an emphatic win.

Foxes: G. Plowman, C. Moule, J. Forrester, D. Forrester, K. White, S. Cragg, K. Reek, D. Belcher, W. Fairbrother, J. Close.

Leics Mutual U/8s
MELTON FOXES CUBS 5 KIRBY MUXLOE 88 0

FOXES gave an excellent all-round performance in their first league game.

They started with relentless pressure and were rewarded when Jack Baker put them in front. The midfield trio of Josh Keightley, Adam Ward and Jack Baker worked tirelessly getting the ball to Jack Alexander up front, who made it 2-0 early in the second half.

The Kirby attack had very little opportunity to get past defenders Jamie Gilbertson and Rory Geraghty who played superbly. Foxes went further ahead with a fine Keightley solo goal and minutes later Alexander put him through to add his second. Baker notched his second just before the final whistle.

Foxes: C. Smith, R. Geraghty,J. Gilbertson (c), A. Ward, J. Baker, J. Keightley, J. Alexander.
