Crowds gathered in Melton town centre on Saturday as turkeys were auctioned off to the highest bidders.
About 50 birds were sold in the Market Place during the Ye Olde Turkey Fayre.
Melton Market manager and auctioneer Tim Webster said the idea was to bring a bit of the cattle market back into the town.
He said: “No-one can remember the last time something like this happened but a Melton beast market in the town centre is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
“Although the town was quiet the event caused a bit of stir and it could be the starting point for something bigger.”
