Work starts on new council HQ

WEDNESDAY: The main contractor has taken possession of the site for Melton Council's new HQ off Burton Street so work can begin in earnest.

Redundant buildings on the site have all been demolished and the area is being cleared ready for the construction of the offices and civic centre.

A newsletter has been distributed to nearby homes and businesses and other interested parties to keep them informed.

A temporary road and footpath have been created to maintain access to Play Close and the car park and hoardings will soon now be put up around the site as Hallam Construction gets to work.

The hoardings feature children's art work following a schools competition and include eye holes so people can see the new building take shape over the coming weeks and months.

The new offices, which will be shared with the county council, Probation Service and other partners, will replace the council's former headquarters in Nottingham Road which had to be demolished following a fire in May 2008.

They are due to open by next May to comply with the terms of Melton Council's insurers which is covering the cost of the project.
