A talented young sportswoman from the Melton borough has been recognised at a Leicestershire County Council awards ceremony.

Promising multi-event athlete Sophie Pedlar (16), of Eastwell, was among the young achievers who were recognised at the recent event hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer, Lady Gretton.

Sophie was named the winner in the awards’ ‘Young Most Improved Sportsperson of the Year’ category. Winners were presented with prizes with a value of up to £500.

Sophie’s award citation read: “Just nine months after taking up the Modern Pentathlon (which includes swimming, running, shooting, riding, and fencing), Sophie was placed tenth in the GB Youth Championships and fourth at the Pony Club National Tetrathlon Championships (swimming, running, shooting, and riding) in her first year in the senior 15-21 age group, being unbeaten in the East Midlands all year.

“During the year Sophie qualified for nine national championships, all those she was eligible for, and improved her personal bests and rankings at each one; a huge achievement.

“Sophie has worked incredibly hard, combining around 17 hours of sports training a week with taking maths GCSE a year early, and getting A*, and still volunteering with younger children with her branch of The Pony Club, school and Five Boroughs Pentathlon Club to help inspire them.

“Although this year was her first year at senior level, she was selected as part of the combined East of England & East Midlands Pony Club Regional Championships Open Girls team (21 & under), where she helped the team to second place. She was also selected as part of the East Midlands Area 21 & under mixed team at the Pony Club Championships in Yorkshire, where they secured team third as well as her individual fourth place.

“Sophie is a focussed, talented, hard-working, but very mature and down-to-earth multi-event athlete, who sets herself ambitious targets. She constantly makes the best of the opportunities available to her and is impressively good at time management to ensure she gets everything fitted in.”
