WEDNESDAY NOON: Fingerprint technology is being used as part of a new library system at Old Dalby Primary School.
Pupils will be able to take books out either by having their thumbprint scanned or by using a card with a bar code on it.
As well as improving the speed and efficiency of borrowing and access to information, the new system is aimed at encouraging children to enjoy reading and to read a wide variety of books.
Headteacher Steve Cliff said: "All our books have now been catalogued on the system. We're looking to start using it after half-term with the Year 6 before rolling it out over a number of weeks.
"It's a very simple system. There are two ways of taking books out. One is by using a thumbprint reader and the other is using a card. The reality is children do lose things like cards but they can't lose their thumbs.
"The new system will enable pupils to have more control over borrowing. We will be able to see what books they are reading and analyse that data to really find out which books they like reading and to ensure we have the books they enjoy reading. Pupils will also be able to rate books using the new system."
