For most people completing a 100 kilomtere walk for charity is something you do once, but for one Kinoulton man it’s becoming a regular activity.

Richard Smailes, who works as a volunteer at Dove Cottage Day Hospice’s team room in the Vale of Belvoir, has completed the London 2 Brighton Challenge, for the second year in succession.

The avid walker has raised £300 for the hospice he holds dear to his heart.

Richard said: “I first became involved with Dove Cottage via my daughter Harriet, who joined as a sixth form student volunteer. When Harriet went off to university, I stepped into her shoes and have been serving tea and cake to the good people of the Vale of Belvoir for over a year now.

“My first London to Brighton trek was in 2015, after which I vowed never to do it again!

“Clearly this vow did not last as I took part in the 100 kilometre walk again this year, raising about £300 for Dove. In 2015 I raised over £1,00 for the NSPCC.”
