Mr Blase secured 255 votes, with Conservative candidate Madeleine Smith coming second with 158 votes.

The other candidates standing were UKIP’s John Scutter (136 votes) and Independents Marilyn Gordon (70 votes) and Andrea Lovegrove (49 votes).

Mr Blase succeeds former Conservative Egerton Ward councillor Peter Faulkner who resigned from the council in January.

Mr Blase said: “I’d thank all of those who voted and, of course, especially those who put their trust in me to represent them at Melton Borough Council. I’d also like to say a big thank you to the many friends and colleagues who helped me during the election campaign.

“I will now set about the task of representing all local residents, working with others when I can, in the best interests of Egerton Ward and the town.

“I will make arrangements for surgeries as soon as possible but meanwhile if anybody has an issue they would like me to raise please don’t hesitate to contact me.”
