A new council committee able to deal with specific issues relevant to the Melton town area has been set up.

Melton Council’s new town area committee will cover the Craven, Dorian, Egerton, Newport, Sysonby and Warwick wards.

The committee will have delegated functions to deal with specific issues relevant to the town including community centres, recreation grounds, open spaces, the cemetery, churchyards, war memorials, allotments and other public services.

It will also carry out a consultative role in respect to planning and development proposals for the town and, where required, will be consultedon licensing matters for the town. Within its delegated functions the committee will also be able to exercise the council’s grant-making powers.

Speaking at a full council meeting last Wednesday the authority’s leader, Byron Rhodes, said: “The setting up of this committee is in response to demand which has been around for a number of years, for people in the town to have more focused representation for affairs that only affect the town.”

Deputy leader Pam Posnett added: “Having been a town councillor for the last 13 years I know this is something the residents of the town will greatly appreciate.”

The committee will be chaired by new Warwick ward Conservative councillor Tom Greenow (25).
