Pupils and staff at a Melton school were evacuated this afternoon (Wednesday) when a fire broke out.

Fire crews from Melton and Oakham attended Long Field Academy, off Ambleside Way, after emergency calls were made at 3.15pm.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said; “We were called out to a fire at a school and the school had been fully evacuated.

“Two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet was used under rapid deployment to extinguish the fire and a fan was used to ventilate the area.”

Long Field Academy posted on their Facebook site: “An eventful afternoon at school, we have had a small fire, put out by a rather brave/stupid headteacher.

“Everyone is safe and school is open as normal tomorrow.

“Open evening will also be going ahead as normal, see you at 6pm.”
