A record number of riders took to the saddle for this year’s Pork Pie Pedal charity bike ride.

About 115 riders took part in the 50-mile event which saw them set off from Saxby Road in Melton to Rutland Water, cycling around the reservoir and then heading back to Melton.

This year an additional optional loop allowed cyclists to increase their route to 60 or 70 miles.

Justin Morgan, one of the organisers, said: “This year was the biggest ever event with participants from as far a field as London, Beford, Manchester and even Northern Ireland.

“The support we had from all the local companies was fantastic. A special thank you must go to our sponsors, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Belvoir Fruit Farms, Dickinson & Morris and Snapper Graphics.

“All the locals who baked so ferociously and all the cyclists who took part have allowed us to hand over around £8,000 to be shared between this year’s charities – Parkinson’s UK and Crohn’s and Colitus UK.”
