The proceeds from last year’s Mayor’s Appeal have been handed out to local junior sports charity the Belvoir Cricket and Countryside Trust.

A total of £2,402,20 was presented to the charity which was raised during Councillor Jeanne Douglas’ 2015-2016 year of office.

Darren Bicknell accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity which encourages healthy lifestyles through sports participation in rural communities.

Councillor Douglas said: “I was delighted to be able to present the Belvoir Cricket and Countryside Trust with a healthy cheque, as a result of grand fundraising efforts by the charity caretakers themselves and other contributors, as well as all those who have donated invaluable raffle prizes.

“It has been an eye-opener to see just what we as a community can achieve when we all strive together for valid charitable causes.

“I shall also be presenting my other charity - Emmaus - with a similar cheque in due course. Emmaus themselves have gone from strength to strength and actually won the Leicestershire High Sheriff’s Award last year for all their supreme efforts working with homelessness.

“My thanks again to all concerned who have made this possible.”
