MORE than 1,000 speeding motorists have been identified by villagers as part of a community road safety scheme.

Fifty people who live in Wymeswold were trained to operate speed cameras to monitor traffic passing through the village.

And they recorded 1,145 vehicles being driven at speeds of at least 5mph faster than the 30mph limit.

The survey was initiated after the issue of road safety produced the highest level of concern of any of the topics covered in the Parish Plan questionnaire. It revealed 91 per cent of residents were ‘concerned’ or ‘very concerned’ about heavy vehicles moving on the A6006.

Parish councillor Jo Ling, who took part in the community speedwatch scheme, said: “Bearing in mind that two-thirds of all crashes in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less and that at 35mph a driver is twice as likely to kill someone as they are at 30mph, I think our results are extremely alarming.

“It would appear that concerns raised by parishioners have been justified.

“Many of the cars were doing in excess of 40mph and some motorists were recorded in excess of 50mph.

“With the exception of 13 vehicles, all of these were recorded on the A6006.”

A key action point in the Parish Plan was to lobby local authorities and agencies to reduce traffic speeds in the village and examine the possibility of building a bypass.

The recent development of a large housing estate has led to more people, including many children, regularly crossing the busy A6006.
