Third Hamilton fun run and family day gets big entry and raises over £1,200 for the Teenage Cancer Trust

The third 3.4 mile fun run starting at Hamilton Tennis Club, on Sunday, had 96 people take part in support of Sam Mayfield, a Melton man who is receiving ongoing treatment for Bowel Cancer, at the Teenage Cancer Trust unit situated at Leicester’s Royal Infirmary.

The race took competitors on a route around Melton Airfield once again. Last year’s winner, Duncan Greene, was victorious again. He completed the course in a time of 21 mins and 20 secs.

Members of Mr Mayfield’s family entered the fun run and Sam helped present medals to the winners.

Other attractions on the day included a barbecue, bouncy castle, live music, tyre tennis, photo booth, raffle and face painting.

Organiser Patrick Wainwright said: “We managed to raise about £1,200 on the day, but with more sponsorship still to come in we reckon it’ll be about £1,500 in total.

“This year we had plenty of dog walkers and fancy dress runners enter. Some of the costumes included 118 118 outfits and fairies. I must also give a special mention to Graham Hall who dressed as a nun ahead of The Melton Mowbray Theatre Company’s Sister Act performances, at Melton Theatre, later this year.

“Next year, I’d like to attract 150 entrants for the race as the event is well established now.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended, my colleagues at Hamilton Tennis Club, the staff at Waterfield Leisure Centre who lead a short pre-race warm up and to people who donated prizes and baked cakes for the raffle.”
