The people creating a better world for our pets
Mars volunteers at local animal shelters
AT the beginning of this year associates at Mars Petcare, producer of leading pet food brands Pedigree, Cesar, Whiskas and Sheba, pledged to embrace the company’s philosophy of making the world a better place for pets.
Through Mars Petcare’s Just One Thing programme, associates are encouraged to do precisely that – just one thing – to help create a better world for our pets. With more than half a million dogs and cats in the UK abandoned and lost, and the problem worsening each day, this year associates focused on helping re-homing shelters across the country.
“At Mars Petcare, we believe each and every one of our associates can make a difference no matter how large or small the contribution,” said community relations manager Angie Phillips.
“We have a very supportive culture that helps employees come up with creative ideas and we provide them with everything they need to fulfill their mission, from tools and equipment to financial support.”
So far, more than 500 Mars Petcare associates have given over 2,420 hours of their time to supporting animal re-homing shelters in the UK and through fundraising and donations have raised £42,326.
Most recently almost 100 Mars Petcare associates broke the Guinness World Record for the largest ever-charitable donation of pet food in 24 hours. Some 4,197.5kg of pet food, the equivalent to almost four family cars, was transported to Leicester Animal Aid and will help feed their pets for at least a year.
Keely Short, general manager at Leicester Animal Aid, said: “We were delighted to have been chosen by Mars Petcare to receive the biggest donation of pet food. In these tough economic times, particularly when we’re up to capacity, this will really help us so we are really grateful for this generous gesture.”
This world record is one activity in a series of volunteering initiatives that have seen associates improve or create new facilities to help attract new owners to the charities, from donating blankets to keep the animals warm in winter to creating a sensory garden to help animals that have been subject to cruelty in their lives.
Angie added: “We have been focusing our ‘One Thing’ efforts to help pets in the UK in our local communities as they remain very important to us as they have done for over 60 years. We are proud to support the Melton Times Community awards for another year and the category of Community spirit, rewarding and recognising those in our community who have done their ‘one thing’ to help others.”
